The vitrum is nineteen centuries old. The size arrives first, the element is chosen to suit it, and the gold is drawn and raised around that element. Four decisions below, and the bench begins.

The size

The European number is the circumference of the band in millimetres. A ring of 54 measures 54 mm inside and 17.2 mm across. Spanish and Italian workshops count that same band as a 14, and the table below holds the rest.

Finding the size

A ring already worn on that finger is the surest measure.

Rest it flat on a bank card, keep the whole card in frame, and photograph it from directly above. The card measures 85.60 mm along its long edge, which gives the image its scale. Attach the photograph below and the reading is confirmed at the bench, before the gold is drawn.

A wide band sits closer than a thin one.

A setting of this depth covers more of the finger, so the upper of two readings is the one to choose. Measure at the end of the day, when the hand is at its widest: a warm hand and a cold hand read two sizes apart.

The outer face belongs to its century. The inner face is yours. An inscription is cut into the inside of the band, in the Roman capitals of the house, before the vitrum is set. Roman numerals carry a date well: XIV·VI·MMXXVI.

The ring
One Roman vitrum of the 1st century A.D., catalogued in full, held by two retainers of 18k gold in a band raised to the size you choose. The two retainers hold it at the ends alone, so the ancient face stays in view front and back.

The passport
Twelve entries, printed and folded into the case: reference, object, culture and period, materials, measurements and weight, condition, the record, what remains open, legal notes, care, the date of issue, and the name of the collector. It is also the certificate of authenticity, so one document carries both.

The box
The jewellery case the ring travels in, with the passport beside it and a cloth for the gold. It arrives closed, sealed and ready to be given.

The papers
The invoice under the margin scheme for antiques, and, for a destination beyond the European Union, the export authorisation prepared for this reference and issued in its own name.
